![]() The M43 would be produced at Fábrica de La Coruña from 1944 until 1958, with nearly half a million produced for the Army, Navy and Civil Guard. This would be the basis for the development and adoption of the Spanish Model 1943. During this time, Spain would see a huge influx of weapons from both sides, including many German pattern 1898 rifles, including the Mauser Standard Model of export rifle: the same model widely exported to China around this same time. ![]() During this time, Germany, Italy and Russia would use this as a proxy war to prop up those who politically aligned with them the communists aligning with the Spanish Republicans and the Fascists aligning with the fascists led by Francisco Franco. It would see an update in 1916 with the Model 1916 series of short rifles and this rifle would be produced through the late 1930's throughout the Spanish Civil War. This pattern of "small ring" Mauser would remain in use by the Spanish for the duration of the Spanish American war, where its success would play a huge role in the US development and adoption of the 1903 rifle. Early 1891 pattern rifles were trialed in relatively small numbers, but when the 1893 pattern Mauser was introduced, Spain was sold.
